1942 a Cafe Story: Coffee House to Restaurant Chain

In the bustling heart of Delhi's Connaught Place (CP) in 1942, the United Coffee House (UCH) emerged as the city's pioneering café, etching its roots deep into the pre-partition zeitgeist pulsating with India's struggle for independence. Founded by Lala Hans Raj Kalra, this iconic establishment was born out of a necessity recognized by its visionary founder – a dearth of spaces where individuals could convene to exchange ideas amidst the fervor of political movements against British rule.

As the managing director of the United Group, Akash Kalra, the grandson of the founder, elucidates, UCH was a novel concept in a time when the notion of leisurely café culture was nascent. It was a haven where poets, artists, and bureaucrats congregated, nurturing an environment where thoughts flowed as freely as the coffee brewed.

The early years witnessed a diverse clientele drawn by the simplicity of coffee, sandwiches, and savories, with operating hours restricted until the 1950s when dinner service commenced. Situated in the heart of Lutyens' Delhi, CP evolved into a vibrant hub post-independence, mirroring the expansion of UCH's offerings from simple refreshments to a comprehensive dining experience encompassing Indian, Continental, and eventually Asian cuisines.

The culinary evolution of UCH was propelled by the recruitment of esteemed Bengali chefs from renowned clubs in Kolkata and Mumbai, blending their expertise with international influences garnered from British training. Signature dishes like the tomato fish, a creation of 1962, epitomized UCH's innovative culinary journey, resonating with patrons across generations.

Beyond gastronomy, UCH became a cultural nexus that luminaries like LK Advani and MF Husain frequented, and the venue of choice for Youth Congress meetings and Raj Kapoor film premieres. Furthermore, UCH inadvertently played matchmaker during the '50s and '60s, with its ambiance facilitating matrimonial alliances, earning a reputation as a fortuitous rendezvous spot.

Today, UCH stands as a testament to its enduring legacy, poised to launch its tenth restaurant, symbolizing a journey from a humble café in 1942 to a revered culinary institution synonymous with Delhi's cultural tapestry.
